Govt Addresses Reports of Mass Firings in Kazi Mtaani Program

Govt Addresses Reports of Mass Firings in Kazi Mtaani Program 13 February 2021 - 9:38 am Government Spokesperson Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna during a community engagement forum in Kaptembwa, Nakuru County on February 12, 2021. Twitter Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has responded to claims that the government would discontinue the Kazi Mtaani initiative that would lead to thousands of youth under the program losing their jobs. Oguna on Friday, February 12, released a statement following reporting by a local media house quoting the official directing youth to leave the programme as the government had no money to sustain it. The alleged statement which the spokesperson has come out to refute elicited backlash from a number of Kenyans online who faulted the government for being detached from the situation for many Kenyans in the grassroots.

Concern over removal of riverside trees in Limerick

Concern over removal of riverside trees in Limerick Reporter: 11 Feb 2021 ); The Maigue catchment we have almost 1,300km of river channel. The Maigue, Loobagh, Morningstar, Camoge, Barnakyle, Clonshire, flow through Charleville, Kilfinane, Kilmallock, Bruff, Knocklong, Bruree, Croom, Patrickswell, Adare, to name but a few. In the past three months, the Maigue Rivers Trust has received three reports from local people highlighting tree removal along sections of the rivers. Riverside trees are essential to healthy rivers but often their value is not fully appreciated until it is too late. Deteriorating water quality, habitat loss from arterial drainage schemes and loss of the natural riverside vegetation have had a detrimental impact on native wildlife and fish. At the time of the widespread drainage schemes, the landowners’ understandable primary motives were to improve the agriculture productivity of the land.

Nairobi Landlords Up in Arms Over Cheap Housing Projects

Nairobi Landlords Up in Arms Over Cheap Housing Projects A photo showing a section of Umoja 1 estate in Nairobi. File Nairobi landlords have protested various affordable housing projects unveiled in the city by the Chinese and the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).  The local developers argued that some of the projects especially those by foreign nationals were substandard and circumvented Kenyan laws. The National Construction Authority (NCA) was accused of failing to regulate the industry. NCA provides licences and inspects the construction of buildings in Kenya.  Projects from China are reportedly undertaken under relatively low budget and are time efficient. Most of the foreign companies are currently building skyscrapers in the posh suburbs in Nairobi.
