Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin phase-3 trials crosses half-way mark at 13,000 volunteers
Bharat Biotech on Tuesday announced successful recruitment of 13,000 volunteers and continued progress towards achieving the goal of 26,000 participants for Phase-3 clinical trial of first Make in India vaccine candidate, Covaxin across multiple sites in India. This is Indiaâs first and only Phase 3 efficacy study for a COVID-19 vaccine, and the largest phase III efficacy trial ever conducted for any vaccine in India.
Covaxin was evaluated in approximately 1,000 subjects in the first two phases, with the results receiving acceptance in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, a statement from Bharat Biotech said today.

Last week, an 11-year-old boy died in Kozhikode, Kerala due to a Shigella infection. The State Health Department said that six people had been confirmed as havinh the infection and over 30 people had been treated as suspected cases. The Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, has begun an investigation into the outbreak.
Shigella is a genus of bacteria that causes an infection called shigellosis. It is the second leading cause of bacterial diarrhea worldwide and the third leading cause of death in children less than 5 years old.

The Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, has begun an investigation into the outbreak of shigella bacterial infection at Kottamparamba- Mundikkalthazham at Mayanad area in the city.
This follows the recent death of a 11-year-old boy due to the infection and hospitalisation of scores of others after symptoms were found among them. The Health Department claims that six people were confirmed to have the infection and 19 others were suspected cases. Some of them were discharged later.
New Delhi: The rollout of COVID-19 vaccine by Bharat Biotech for the general public may get delayed as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where its Phase 3 human clinical trial is underway, is struggling to find takers of the trial shots, the official heading the project said.
Speaking to IANS, Sanjay Rai, the doctor who is the principal investigator (PI) of Covaxin trial, stated that there are chances that the vaccine may get delayed for public use if the participation of subjects in the trial does not go up.
“The rollout would definitely get delayed if the participation in the trial remains low and does not meet the targeted sample size. With low sample size, the credible data on efficacy will not be achieved,” he said.
