Gregory Allicar Museum of Art announces new gifts, exhibition and hours

College of Liberal Arts 10 May, 2021  Story by Madeleine Boyson  In the spirit of the changing spring weather, the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art is highlighting transformation in its galleries by featuring a reinstallation of the African permanent gallery with new gifts, the 2021 MFA Thesis Exhibition and new public visitation hours beginning May 14. In addition, MFA graduates will present their work and participate in a virtual panel discussion on May 13. Nine donors recently presented 162 objects to GAMA that exemplify the geographical regions of the African continent and consist of beading, ceramics, metals, textiles and wood works. Many of these gifts will be displayed in the newly reinstalled African art permanent gallery, including a stunning 20th-century iron Fon Asen by an unidentified artist from the Republic of Benin and a 20th-century Nigerian ceramic censer dedicated to the

First-ever Providence Public Housing murals pay homage to immigrants Alexa Gagosz © Jonathan Wiggs/Globe Staff Angela AGONZA Gonzalez has a newly installed set of murals located at the Hartford Park housing development. This public art project is one of several taking place throughout the city as part of the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism (ACT) Public Art Residency, an initiative of the Departments Public Art Program. The six-month residency program places artists in city facilities to engage directly with residents and staff. PROVIDENCE Providence artist Angela “AGONZA” Gonzalez was told that long ago, immigrants built the structures of the Hartford Park public housing projects. They built them strong, she said, and they filled the community that stretches through the western edge of the city.

Restoration on one of Malta s oldest Madonnas almost complete

The white Carrara marble sculpture portraying the Madonna holding the Christ Child that was situated behind the main altar of the Observant Franciscan church of Ta’ Ġieżu in Rabat has been conserved and restored at the Prevarti Ltd laboratory. The life-size Madonna and Child sculpture will be returned to the church this week, to be placed on the second altar on the north aisle where it was intended to be placed after the 1757 reconstruction of the Rabat church. After being removed from the church on September 15, and as part of the research and prior to the cleaning tests and conservation, the sculpture has been subjected to intense photographic documentation, tests under UV and Gamma rays, as well as 3D scans.

Ashland, Russell rack up art honors

ASHLAND Several area students have placed at the Burley-Coal Regional Art Competition. The show, typically on the Morehead State University campus, features hundreds of works in all media by regional high school students. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the exhibit is virtual. Winners from Russell High School are: • Ashlee Steele won first place in paintings for “Self Portrait. She also won first place in printmaking for Untitled and second place in ceramics for Fish. • Kole Hester won second place in drawing for “F4TH3R & 50N.” He also won honorable mention in drawing for “Psychokinetic.” • Rosie France won second placed in mixed media for Insomnia.
