WHMI 93 5 Local News : Competency Exam Ordered For Suspect In MSP Shooting

April 28, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com A competency exam has been ordered for a Grand Rapids man shot earlier this month in Howell Township by a Michigan State Police trooper. 20-year-old Tristan Stavedahl was shot April 16th on Milett Road, north of North Burkhart Road by a Detective Trooper with the Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team (LAWNET) who was in the area searching for a car theft suspect. State Police say that Stavedahl was armed when he encountered the trooper, who opened fire. Officials have not said if Stavedahl fired on the trooper first, or what actions he took prior to being shot. A press release issued after the incident only said that Stavedahl was armed and shot after a brief encounter. Stavedahl was taken to U of M Hospital for treatment, but has since been released and is lodged in the Livingston County Jail.

WHMI 93 5 Local News : MSP Says Detective Shoots Armed Car Theft Suspect

April 13, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com Michigan State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning in Howell Township, near the Tanger Outlet Center. Michigan State Police Public Information Officer, Lt. Brian Oleksyk says that the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office was investigating an incident involving a stolen car resulting in a crash this morning on Milett Road, south of I-96, across from the outlet mall. A Detective Trooper was in the area assisting in the search when the officer confronted a 20-year-old Grand Rapids-area resident who matched the suspect’s description. The suspect reportedly showed a weapon, at which point the MSP Detective shot the individual. The trooper then rendered first aid. The suspect was transported to U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor and was last reported to be in stable condition.

Burkhart Road along Interstate 96 closed amid heavy police presence

A Grand Rapids man is in stable condition after police shot him in Howell Township Tuesday morning. According to tweets from the Michigan State Police, officers were in the area of Milett Road between Layton Road and Marketplace Drive looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a stolen vehicle following a traffic crash early Tuesday morning.  A state trooper located a 20-year-old Grand Rapids man who matched the suspect s description, according to a state police Twitter post. Police said the incident took place around 9:45 a.m.  The man was armed and showed a gun when the trooper shot him, according to Michigan State Police Public Information Officer Lt. Brian Oleksyk. The man was transported to a local hospital and is stable condition, he said.
