News that a developer plans to include up to 22 secondary rental units in a proposed townhouse development in north-west Port Elgin is “something to celebrate” as the Town of Saugeen Shores attempts to encourage developers to build affordable housing.

As development in Saugeen Shores continues to expand, there are opportunities to investigate with developers if there is room for some affordable housing.
That was the thought of Mayor Luke Charbonneau and Committee of the Whole on April 26th, as bylaws were approved to move ahead with the next phase of Summerside subdivision in the north end of Port Elgin.
Over 100 living units will be created in the two developments but because the applications were made several years ago, there was little talk of affordable housing and wasn’t included in the process.
Charbonneau says now, that issue is front and centre and although Lord Elgin Estates Developments are not bound by any attainable housing requirements, it doesn’t hurt to ask.
