Wayne County s chief circuit judge ruled Thursday that Taylor Mayor Rick Sollars isn t eligible to appear on the Aug. 3 ballot because of his failure to file several campaign finance reports and pay fines prior to filing for reelection.
Chief Judge Timothy Kenny sided with the earlier findings of Taylor City Clerk Cynthia Bower, agreeing she made the right call last month when she declared that Sollars, who is under federal indictment, is ineligible. Kenny also dissolved a temporary restraining order he issued earlier this month that forced Taylor s Election Commission to certify Sollars for the ballot until he could hold a hearing.
Wayne, Oakland County courts eye resuming jury trials this summer

If all goes well, jury trials in circuit courts in Wayne and Oakland counties will resume this summer, officials said Wednesday.
Chief Judge Timothy Kenny of Wayne County Circuit Court said July 19 is the target date for the court to start holding the trials again as new COVID-19 cases decline in Metro Detroit and across the state. In Oakland County, court administrator Kevin Oeffner said officials have no firm timetable but hope to resume jury trials as soon as next month.
Kenny said the pandemic s greatest impact on court operations has been the start-stop cycle of jury trials since the coronavirus was first discovered in Michigan in March 2020.

Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree says the move will protect nearly 7,000 properties.
Wayne County tax foreclosures have been postponed for occupied properties until March 31, 2022. Wayne County 3rd Circuit Court Judge Timothy Kenny issued an order to delay the tax auction for occupied properties after receiving a petition from Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree. The order partially extends a moratorium on tax foreclosures already in place that had been set to expire late this week.
Sabree says the move will protect nearly 7,000 properties total: 2,400 owner-occupied properties, 4,100 non-owner-occupied rental properties and about 170 commercial-occupied properties.
“We want to make sure that because of COVID-19, that anyone that’s living in a property or running a business that’s operating, that they don’t lose their property.” Eric Sabree, Wayne County Treasurer

New Detroit plan would help 31,000 residents avoid foreclosure
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced the Pay as you stay plan on Wednesday. The housing plan is intended to help residents avoid tax foreclosure by easing the financial burden on the city s lowest earners. About 31,000 residents could help avoid foreclosure with the aid of the plan, which would eliminate all interest, penalties and fees and the only balance due would be back taxes or 10 percent of the home s value. The plan still needs approval by the state legislature.
