Winter Harbor Lobster Festival a no-go, but fireworks and boat races will happen
WINTER HARBOR For the second year in a row, the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival will not officially happen in August due to the ongoing pandemic, but tourists and townspeople will still be able to enjoy the annual lobster boat races and fireworks.
Those two activities “have always been separate and independent” of the town-sanctioned festival, Town Manager Cathy Carruthers explained. The races and fireworks are sponsored by D.C. Air & Seafood, which is owned by Selectman Christopher Byers.
The unanimous decision to not officially hold the festival was made following discussion at the Board of Selectmen’s May 10 meeting.
Positive COVID-19 cases within RSU 24
STEUBEN Positive COVID-19 cases have affected several schools within Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24) since last week.
Students at the Ella Lewis School attended classes remotely on Friday after an individual associated with the school tested positive for COVID-19.
According to a May 6 letter from RSU 24 Superintendent Michael Eastman, three staff members and 23 students were initially required to quarantine and be out of the building until May 17. Then, in a May 10 letter, Eastman said the school received updated information from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stating the school could “lift the quarantine status for those individuals that were impacted by the positive test. All Ella Lewis students and staff that were impacted will be welcomed back into the building tomorrow, May 11.” The letter also states that the Ella Lewis School shares no connection to a positive case detected at a local daycare center.
