Members of the Worcester Police Department represented 90 of the city’s top 100 earners in 2020, according to payroll records.
City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. took home the highest paycheck, making a total of $279,770 in 2020, keeping on trend with payroll records from previous years. Police Chief Steven Sargent received the city’s second-largest salary, taking home $239,130, records indicate.

Dr. Michael Hirsh had difficulty sleeping Sunday night. Worcester’s medical director and UMass Memorial Health Care’s director of trauma services and surgeon-in-chief of the Children’s Medical Center felt the excitement of Monday morning when the city began administering COVID vaccines to first responders in Worcester.
He elevated Monday ahead of the day when he received the vaccine.
“There’s a lot of people who are going to have immunity, which is great,” Hirsh said.
Masks covered the faces of Worcester Police Chief Steve Sargent and Fire Chief Michael Lavoie but joy permeated from their expressions as each became the first first responders in the city to receive Moderna’s vaccine.
COVID-19 Vaccinations Begin For First Responders In Massachusetts
CBS Boston 1/11/2021 Syndicated Local – CBS Boston
BOSTON (CBS) – About 45,000 first responders in Massachusetts became eligible Monday to get COVID-19 vaccinations at more than 60 approved locations across the state.
All first responders have to sign up for an appointment and bring one form of identification – a badge, an employer ID, a paystub and license, or a letter from their chief. They must also make an appointment at the same location for their second dose of the vaccine.
“We worry about bringing it home to our families. But also, working with the community, we don’t want to be super-spreaders,” said Worcester Police Chief Steven Sargent. He and Fire Chief Michael Lavoie were both vaccinated Monday morning, each getting their first dose of the Moderna shot.
