We’re told they plan to do so by expanding the Residential Safety Program, hazmat inspection procedures and providing the public with information. Grand Rapids saw a notable increase in deaths relating to fires in 2020, according to the City of Grand Rapids, adding that nine people died across five fatal fires. “These fatalities were in different areas, affected different ages and had different causes,” says Fire Chief John Lehman, “but the one thing they all had in common is no working smoke alarms.”
