GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â The Grand Rapids Fire Department is hoping to reduce fire breakouts by educating the community on fire prevention.
Weâre told they plan to do so by expanding the Residential Safety Program, hazmat inspection procedures and providing the public with information.
Grand Rapids saw a notable increase in deaths relating to fires in 2020, according to the City of Grand Rapids, adding that nine people died across five fatal fires.
âThese fatalities were in different areas, affected different ages and had different causes,â says Fire Chief John Lehman, âbut the one thing they all had in common is no working smoke alarms.â
