2020 may be over, but its aftershocks are still felt in the capital as yet another longstanding establishment falls victim to the difficulties of the past year. Yesterday afternoon,
As any good bar deserves, they’ll be going out with a blast, offering buy-one-get-one drinks all night for its final days, today and tomorrow (Jan 29-30).
“A lot of businesses are facing [an] unprecedented sever test,” the announcement of closure read. “Unfortunately, we didn’t survive this disaster.”
First Floor opened in 2010, making it an early bird in post-Olympic Beijing. Its closing now gives it a legacy bookmarked squarely between the two most reshaping events the city has seen this century.

No, we’re not referring to the Lady Gaga tune “Tea” from 2012. Gaga is, in fact, the latest tea shop to hit in Sanlitun’s Taikooli after becoming a smash hit in Shenzhen. But it’s far more than another counter-in-the-wall milk tea stand, or even your typical chill hangout and sip with a good book kind of spot – it’s actually a huge, two-story space that exudes an aura that might have you feeling a bit underdressed in a jeans and a hoodie, though you’d fit right in sporting a black turtleneck.

Temple opened the same year I started LiveBeijingMusic. I can still vividly recall my first night there in late December 2011, after wandering aimlessly on the streets of Gulou, stumbling in to catch Jurat T.T perform. Temple Bar was like a godsend, a sanctuary for no-frills rock and roll kicks that wasn t afraid to dive into the deep end of delirium. A blackhole of disorder, musical mayhem, unchecked temptation, and the most uproarious late-evenings best left out of the history books. My blood, sweat, and tears have been ingrained in the wood there, coffee shots still haunt me, and some of my favorite musical discoveries were unearthed within those hallowed halls. Simply put, there is no substitute for Temple Bar – which makes me sad to say that it is one of 2021’s first causalities.
