India’s current Covid-19 vaccine production capacity is insufficient to meet its target of administering five million doses per day, an expert panel underlined on Wednesday, shedding light on shortages flagged by states but denied by the Union health ministry. A 22-member India Task Force has cautioned that monthly vaccine supplies for the inoculation campaign at the current production capacity of 70 to 80 million doses per month would “fall short by half” for the target of 150 million doses per month. “It is critical to ramp up production capacity,” the task force a group of public health experts, senior government administrators and academic researchers assigned to propose options to address India’s second Covid-19 wave has said in a report.
