North Yorkshire Police will go back to the dark days

Simon Dennis, North Yorkshire Police, Foire and Crime Commissioner chief executive A FORMER leader of the statutory body representing police officers has launched a withering attack on the appointment of a police commissioner’s chief officer, saying it would take the force “back to the dark days”. Mike Stubbs, who was chair of North Yorkshire Police Federation from 2014 to 2017, has questioned commissioner Julia Mulligan’s decision to hand the force’s former solicitor Simon Dennis the £90,000-a-year job as the commissioner’s chief executive and monitoring officer. His comments come just weeks after Mrs Mulligan told the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Panel that Mr Dennis had been the outstanding candidate to apply for the role “by some way”. The panel approved Mrs Mulligan’s appointment after Mr Dennis told them he had extensive experience of challenging senior figures.

Craven anti-speeding groups benefit from selling of historic AJ1 number plate

Julia Mulligan TRAFFIC calming on the A65 at Ingleton is one of six anti-speeding projects in Craven to receive a share of cash raised by the selling of the first numberplate used in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Six parish councils in Craven are amongst 81 community groups across the county to benefit from a third of a million pounds of investment in road safety improvements funded by the £243,000 sale of the historic AJ1 vehicle registration by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan. Mrs Mulligan, who stands down from her role at the May elections, decided, along with North Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Lisa Winward, that the AJ1 mark was better invested in supporting communities and it was sold commercially at auction in 2019.

Villagers want more measures to stop speeding in village CAMPAIGNERS fighting speeding and dangerous traffic through Cowling have been given a glimmer of hope after the area’s police and crime commissioner said she had asked for a fresh look at fixed cameras. Julia Mulligan, North Yorkshire’s police, fire, and crime commissioner, said she had a lot of sympathy with places like Cowling that were blighted by high levels of speeding traffic. And she said she had pressed road safety partnership 95 Alive to re-visit the policy on the use of fixed speed cameras in North Yorkshire. “I have a lot of sympathy for Cowling and their traffic problems. The problem is there is a high volume of traffic going through the village and when the authorities look at the data the average suggests there is not a problem,” she said.
