Srinagar: The authorities in Kashmir have issued directions to the health services department to desist from speaking with journalists even as its healthcare system shows signs of buckling under the weight of increasing caseload of new COVID-19 infections.

On April 25, Saifullah Bashir was taken aback when he got a call from a health department official declaring him Covid-19 positive after a wait of eight days. During this period he had mingled with his family as he was asymptomatic.
Bashir, a student had gone for RT-PCR testing at the Primary Health Centre in Batamaloo (Srinagar) on April 17 following contact with a Covid-19 patient.

95% of COVID-19 beds and ventilator-supported beds occupied in Srinagar, say officials
J&K recorded 37 deaths and 4,650 positive cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, posing a major challenge to the health infrastructure. The Union Territory has extended the lockdown in five districts up to May 10.
An official said 1,463 of the new cases were from the Jammu division and 3,187 from the Kashmir division. “25 of the deaths were from the Jammu division and 12 from the Kashmir division.”

Two days after the incident, when heavy rain lashed Srinagar, I went to Upper Primary Health Centre Batamaloo. I was of the opinion that it will take me few minutes to get tested for the novel Coronavirus but my perceptions turned topsy-turvy as it took me three hours to get tested.
While waiting in the long queue I got drenched in rain. Amid pushes and pulls, I tried to save my eyes from the sticks of the umbrella I was carrying.
Covaxin will be given to those who have pre-registered: official
Jammu and Kashmir will roll out vaccination for people in the age group of 18-44 from May 1.
An official said Covaxin doses will be administered in Srinagar and Jammu districts in the first phase.
“Covaxin is being launched in capital cities of J&K for people who are 18 years and above and have pre-registered,” an official said.
An official said the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital, which ran out of vaccine stocks two days ago, will start inoculation from 4 p.m.
“Those who have taken Covishield as the first dose shall take the second dose of Covishield only,” the official said.
