Last week, “Dark Skinned Pavement” made its way to the Vonnie Borden Theatre stage, reflecting similar incidents from the past few months involving police brutality and protests.
The play premiered from April 27-30 at 7:30 p.m. Written by TJ Young, the winner of the Inkslinger Playwriting Competition, the play highlights the grievances of a Black American family who lost their son to police brutality.
Faculty member and director Anne-Liese Fox works for the theatre department and was pleased with the topic and attention that the play drew in on campus.
“I just felt it really spoke to the times because we have been having a lot of incidents lately that deserve to be talked about, and his play really brought that out. It was so well written,” said Fox.
The program is one of only 50 offered in the U.S.
Education students who obtain the certificate, along with their normal diploma upon graduation, are going to be equipped to teach internationally at any university of their choice, unlike an ordinary student in the college of education.
This program allows those graduates to apply specifically to teach at IB schools in the U.S; which are grade schools that have a very meticulous curriculum.
Students are asked to go in depth with every subject and learn how to apply every lesson to the real world. However, it is held to the standards of schools internationally as well, so the curriculum may supersede the U.S. standards, preparing them to flourish in other countries.
The University’s Multicultural and International Student Affairs division hosted Exhibiting African American Culture, an event meant to showcase African American talent and culture through the lens of the students that live on campus.
Dancers Cilicia Thornton and Diamond Lee, part of the student-organized Hip-Hop dance group Flipside, performed a spirited routine at the event, but first were three individual performances by Southeastern students. Biology major Angie Jacobs recited “Dear Black Man,” written by viral poet Ernestine Morrison Johnson.
Up next was Michelle Brister, a music major, who covered the classic soul song, “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke on her electric guitar. Last of the individual performers was Claraion Hill, a senior early childhood education major, who recited “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou.
