We’ve witnessed the long tailbacks of trucks at the Channel ports. We’ve seen the resulting shellfish hold-ups and food shortages and the empty supermarket shelves. We’ve had the sausage wars with Northern Ireland and we’re facing demands from the EU for an increased divorce bill. I don’t recall any of this painted on the side of a big red bus during the referendum campaign! Brussels now says that the UK owes it £40.8 billion, almost £2 billion more than we agreed. The UK claims that the negotiated divorce settlement was between £35bn and £39bn. It looks like our Brexit divorce is going to cost even more than Jeff Bezos’s payment to his ex-wife MacKenzie Bezos, following their explosive split.
UK reverses disarmament policy and decides to increase nuclear arsenal By TPN/Lusa, in News, UK · 16-03-2021 15:39:00 · 1 Comments
The British Government has decided to increase the ceiling of its nuclear arsenal for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union, as part of its strategic review of security, defence and foreign policy published on 16 March.
The UK will raise the ceiling on its stockpile of nuclear warheads from 180 to 260, an increase of about 45 percent, according to the document, which will be presented in Parliament by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
The decision ends a policy of gradual nuclear disarmament that has been ongoing for about 30 years, although it is unusual to publicly reveal the exact number of warheads or missiles.
More nukes and a regional pivot: Britain unveils its long-awaited defense review
Photo credit: Jeff J. Mitchell/Getty Images Photo credit: Jeff J. Mitchell/Getty Images LONDON Britain is to substantially increase its stockpile of nuclear warheads in response to a deteriorating security environment, the government said in a long-awaited review of defense, security and foreign policy released March 16. The move would see Britain increase the inventory to no more than 260 warheads, reversing a decision made a decade ago to cut the maximum from 225 to 180 by the mid-2020s. Depending on exactly how many warheads the country intends to acquire, it could see the strategic weapons count increase by more than 40 percent.
