The Martha s Vineyard Times Three vie for two selectmen seats in O.B. Longtime Oak Bluffs selectman Greg Coogan is not seeking a seventh term. Three candidates are seeking two seats open on the Oak Bluffs board of selectmen, as longtime selectman Greg Coogan will not seek re-election. Nominations closed earlier this week. Coogan, who has served on the board since 2003, is a retired Tisbury School math teacher of 30 years. Incumbent Jason Balboni is seeking his second term on the board. Balboni is the board’s current chairman. Two other candidates are seeking election to the town’s executive board Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group executive director Emma Green-Beach, and retired Oak Bluffs fire lieutenant and EMT Rich Michelson.

Baker s signature. Rich Saltzberg A bill sponsored by state Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Falmouth, to provide greater autonomy to the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group with a 15-year lease at the John T. Hughes Hatchery and Research Station in Oak Bluffs has passed the Massachusetts House and Senate. The bill is on Gov. Charlie Baker’s desk, awaiting a signature.  The Shellfish Group has long used the hatchery as a facility to conduct research and to propagate oysters, scallops and other shellfish.

Brian Dowd In classic Martha’s Vineyard style, a group of oyster farmers and the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group organized an oyster giveaway for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital employees Friday afternoon to give thanks for the hospital’s workers during the pandemic. 5,000 oysters were provided by Jeremy Scheffer of Spearpoint Oysters, Ryan Smith of Signature Oyster Farm, Roy Scheffer of Roysters, Scott Castro of Blue Moon Oysters, and Noah Scheffer of Little Minnow Oyster Co. all donated oysters for the hospital employees. Each employee got a bag of 24.
