Tioga County holds meeting to discuss Sheriff s procedures, police reform

(WBNG) Officials in Tioga County held a community wide zoom meeting Wednesday night to discuss their Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative. The meeting was the second part of a process set in motion by Governor Cuomo s executive order from June directing local governments to take a close look at their police departments. The first part was a community survey that went out to residents in November asking them for feedback on the Tioga County Sheriff s Office. Sheriff Gary Howard kicked off the meeting by detailing the extensive accreditation process the Sheriff s Office must go through to comply with strict state regulations that are already in place.

Photo: Bob Joseph/WNBF News (file) Sheriff’s officials say 31-year-old Timothy Ceurter Junior of Richford had moved but didn’t file with the New York State Sex Offender Registry. The Level Two Sex Offender was arrested by the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division January 19 on a felony charge of failure to register a new address. He was ordered to appear in Town of Richford Court next month.

Photo: WHCU OWEGO, N.Y. (WHCU) – Tioga County officials will be hosting a zoom meeting on its ongoing Police Reform and Reinvention Collaboration January 27 th. This meeting will center on the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office and its relationship with the entire county. The Sheriff will present information and then take questions and address concerns from the public. Also on the call will be the District Attorney, a representative from the Probation Department, and a representative from the Mental Health Department. The Zoom call will be limited to 50 participants, but the meeting will be posted to the County’s YouTube channel afterward.

Waverly woman charged with arson following months-long investigation into fire

(WBNG) A woman was arrested for a suspicious fire that occurred in August 2020, authorities in Tioga County say. The Tioga County Sheriff s Department says 28-year-old Misty M. Smith of Waverly was charged with arson in the second degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and criminal mischief in the second degree. All of these charges are felonies. Smith was arrested following a months-long investigation into a structure fire on Camptown Road in the town of Barton. Several vehicles at the scene had profanity spray-painted on them, too, the sheriff s office says. Smith was arraigned in court and was later released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to appear at the Town of Barton Court on Jan. 19.
