The very first seconds of Pixar’s new feature
Soul, the cue card of the Disney castle, offers some of the best jazz ever heard in a Hollywood movie. The famous theme “When You Wish Upon a Star,” is blared out in a raggedy fashion by a brass band, replete with noisy trumpets, squalling saxophones, and tailgate trombone.
The Night Beat: Jazz Beyond Category Christmas Songs I Like A Lot Share
Expect nothing but mostly Christmas music when Doug Crane hosts a very special Night Beat Jazz Beyond Category on Wednesday evening December 23, beginning at 8 pm.
Doug has chosen some of his long-time favorites and tossed in a batch of recent recordings. He’ll feature performers from around the world including Tia Fuller, Angelique Kidjo, Harry Connick Jr., Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, the vocal sextet Accent, Anna Maria Jopek, John Pizzarelli, Fats Waller and more.
On the lighter side Doug’s pulling out a classic comedy record by Stan Freberg and from Jack Sheldon, a cynical take on the life of a jazz musician playing for yet another season of holiday parties back when holiday parties were a thing.
Honoring Jeff Clayton
Dear Vail Jazz Family,
I write to you with a very heavy heart. We have lost one of the original members of our Jazz Family. Jeff Clayton has passed away, following a long and valiant struggle with cancer.
Jeff’s contributions to this organization are so important and so far reaching that I hardly know where to start, so I will start at the beginning.
The first time I met Jeff was in 1995 when he came to the inaugural Vail Jazz Party. As a novice event producer, I only knew Jeff from the perspective of being a jazz fan, but that all changed that magical weekend when his beautiful tone on his saxophone and his openness and loving nature captivated me and all of our audience and I knew that I wanted to get to know Jeff better and hoped that one day we would become friends. Over time we did become close friends, for as I got to know Jeff better, I realized how caring, loving and selfless he was and our friendship blossomed and grew.
