The real cost of gas- and coal-fired power generation is much higher than investors and analysts realise, according to a study from the RethinkX project. That is because actual capacity factors are much lower than is assumed in most models. But renewable energy has its own problems. According to an article in Harvard Business Review, disposal and recycling costs of solar panels and wind turbines are about to skyrocket. And solar panels are degrading much faster than anticipated. DNV GL, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, has announced that it has provided Sonnedix with technical due diligence for eight operational photovoltaic (PV) plants located in Chile under the category of Small Distributed Generation Mechanisms (PMGD), totalling 40 MW.
The purpose of the review was to evaluate technical risks and mitigation measures relative to typical industry practice as well as to advise on the status of any issues that could jeopardise the performance and impact the base case for the acquisition. The result was key for an acquisition decision, which will include 19 MW of operational solar PV plants with a further 21 MW to be added once the assets become commercially operational.

TechnipFMC is moving ahead with a pilot project for the Deep Purple green hydrogen offshore energy system, which is a key component of its energy transition offering.
The company is leading the consortium to construct and test the system, with Innovation Norway recently announcing its contribution to this €9 million pilot project.
Deep Purple uses offshore wind energy to release hydrogen from seawater. The hydrogen is then stored subsea for later use to provide renewable energy. Deep Purple overcomes one of the challenges of storing energy generated from renewable sources. Deploying these systems is critical to accelerating the energy transition.

As the pipe-laying work on Nord Stream 2 resumes, the US continues to burn political capital with its extra-territorial sanctions on the European companies involved in it.
Most recently, DNV GL has quit the project, leaving open the question of the line’s insurability. The pipeline’s lenders do not doubt – in public – it will be completed and nobody doubts the growing shortage of Europe’s gas reserves. Why then the endeavour to halt it?
