Lake Sheriff s office releases footage in deputy-involved shooting

Gwendolyn Granade called the sheriff s office on Sunday.  “I saw a man holding a rifle or a shotgun, Granade told Daily Commercial this week. He had a look on his face. I can’t describe it.” She said she saw Sayre holding the weapon up in the air, then watched him climb a fence onto an adjoining wooded property. She then heard him shout: “Help.” Granade said she heard a deputy shout, “Show me your hands,” and then heard a single shot. From the video, it appears Sayre was shot in his right side. He was airlifted to the trauma center at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.

Lake sheriff s report released on deputy-involved shooting

The report also reveals the name of the deputy who shot Daniel P. Sayre    Deputy Brian Schneider. But it raises more questions, too. Several hours of body camera footage were released to the Daily Commercial and other news outlets Friday. The videos were slow to download and difficult to examine. In the end, however, no weapon could be seen in the hands of Sayre, though witnesses have said they saw him with a gun.  Meanwhile, the report brings into light what witnesses saw on May 2 in the rural area between Lake Mack and DeLand. That day, LCSO responded to calls of an armed man spooking two horses in a pasture at 1:15 p.m. at 43340 Cooter Pond Road.

Why we re leaving comments on dailycommercial com

Why we re leaving comments on dailycommercial.com Anjanette Delgado and Brian Smith, Gannett, and Talia Stroud, the Center for Media Engagement Commenting sections have gotten a bad rap. When news outlets first launched websites, comment sections were seen as a way to offer readers a place to gather and share their thoughts on the news. Over the years, many went unmonitored or relied on sub-par systems to moderate the comments. Instead of a place for thoughtful debate and engagement, they became filled with spam and vitriol. At the Daily Commercial and the USA TODAY Network, we partnered with the Center for Media Engagement to study our options and find a better path. After extensive research and testing, sites like ours are keeping comments, but with a better system in place. Let us explain.

Bass fishing team of anglers include Umatilla High School JROTC members

That Army Jr. ROTC unit up at the Gateway to the Ocala National Forest is at it again. Some of the cadets have followed Lt. Col. Al Nevarez s lead and are honing their casting skills along with a bevy of other students as part of the Bulldogs Umatilla High School Bass Anglers Club.  They ve already been proving themselves quiet admirably in drill, tactics and the soldierly virtues being taught and modeled by Nevarez and the troopers senior enlisted mentor, Sgt. lst Class Jose Negron. The fledgling bass team has competed in a pair of Major League Fishing (MLF) tournaments and held an intra-club tourney April 17. In that one, Anglers President Owen Vanzant and Taylor Jackson teamed up for first place honors on Lake Yale with a haul of five fish for over 11 pounds.
