Not like me, specifically, but people who want to do what I want to do.
We need people who can confidently communicate scientific information with the people who need to hear it most. We need people who are curious, who want answers and who want to share their findings with others.
Sure, my microbiology major may have contributed to starting a research section. But more than that, I saw a need that I had the ability to address.
Starting a research section allows The Daily Evergreen to train reporters to cover science and research findings that have far-reaching implications. My hope is that students writing for research will consider a career in science communication after being exposed to it here.
As a high schooler, writing was one of my favorite parts of school aside from science. Advanced Placement courses and one journalism class kept that hobby well-fed, but once I was out, the essays turned into reports for classes like biology and chemistry. While I dream to become a neurologist, I also enjoy putting my thoughts into written word, no matter how structured or ambiguous that might be.
Once I began the school year as a junior six months into the pandemic, I finally felt brave enough to once again pursue writing while I completed my pre-medicine requirements. Prior to the start of the semester, I applied to The Daily Evergreen and heard back relatively quickly. Of course, I gushed my excitement to my parents who had always loved to read my writing.
It is an exciting time to be a journalist. Even during the coronavirus pandemic, the news section of The Daily Evergreen remains resilient and ready to tackle any story that will come its way.
WSU’s transition to distance learning changed how Evergreen journalists conduct their reporting. All interviews, meetings and communication between reporters and editors are done virtually.
Although the newsroom is quieter, our reporters’ enthusiasm has not waned. We still strive to cover the most important news for WSU and the Pullman community.
Finding fresh and unique stories is a priority for us. From breaking news to feature pieces, we love to highlight amazing students, alumni, faculty and staff who are using their voices and skills to make a difference in the world around them.
