Hobbling over, his gloved hands clasped behind his hunched back, a grinning bear with vacant eyes and a yellow cardigan approaches you as you walk down Sproul Plaza. It’s Oski the Bear, UC Berkeley’s infamous mascot, and he’s headed your way.
As Cal’s mascot, this iconic albeit questionably designed bear has been gracing UC Berkeley’s sports games since his initial live debut 80 years ago in 1941. However, to get to our modern, infamous Oski, it’s been quite the journey.
Cal fans were proudly proclaiming “Go Bears” long before Oski appeared on the scene. In fact, UC Berkeley’s mascot has been the “Golden Bear” since a Cal track and field meet in 1895, when Cal fans attributed their win to a blue banner donned with a golden bear.

With the return to in-person instruction under a hybrid model, Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, confirmed multiple positive COVID-19 cases in the past week.
After participating in a Berkeley High School boys basketball program last week, three individuals tested positive for the virus, according to a BUSD statement. On Friday, the district was notified of the first positive case and proceeded to follow protocols including contact tracing, requiring all those who participated in practices to quarantine for 10 days and notifying the city’s Public Health Division and school community.
Throughout the course of a week following the preliminary tabulation event, the ASUC Elections Council certified the results of the referendums from the 2021 ASUC elections, which remain to be certified by the ASUC Judicial Council amid conflicting ASUC bylaws and UC Berkeley policies.
At its Monday meeting, the Elections Council certified the passage of the proposition titled Protecting the Checks and Balances of the ASUC Constitution. In accordance with campus policy on referendum fees, the three remaining propositions the Graduate Assembly Fee, Student Technology Fee and Daily Cal Initiative did not pass.
Both the Elections Council and Judicial Councils must certify election results for them to be deemed final.
