Debt consolidation should take place over a longer period to prevent it from being destructive, economist Trudi Makhaya has said.
Makhaya, an economic advisor to President Cyril Ramaphosa, told a webinar on the progress made on the National Development Plan on Thursday morning that debt consolidation shouldn’t be too aggressive and should take place over a five-year period instead of, as some might prefer, a three-year period to allow for spending on education and social services to be maintained as far as possible. Debt is not bad in and of itself but it’s actually about how we deploy that debt, she said.

MALIBU On Monday, December 14, three Malibu City Councilmembers, Bruce Lee Silverstein, Steve Uhring and Paul Grisanti, were all sworn in during the city council meeting zoom call.
The councilmembers were newly elected during the Malibu General Municipal election held on November 3. Their four-year terms began when they were sworn in with councilmember Paul Grisanti elected as Mayor Pro-Tem.

Angela Andrews took the oath Tuesday as a newly elected Hayward City Council member, and retiring Councilmember Al Mendall stepped down after two terms of service on the City s legislative body.

Returning Councilmembers Elisa Márquez, Mark Salinas and Francisco Zermeño also were sworn in to new four-year Council terms following their re-elections in the Nov. 3 municipal election.
And Councilmember Aisha Wahab was voted Mayor Pro Tempore by her colleagues on Tuesday and will serve in the vice mayor role on the seven-member Council for the next year.
