Much of the parish-wide flooding that has occurred since the hurricanes has been caused due to the debris that remained lodged in ditches and blocking culverts, Bellard said.
Parish government last year did not have a contract with any independent waste removal companies, which meant neither St. Landry nor the SWC would be eligible to receive reimbursement from FEMA, Bellard added.
Last week the Parish Council authorized Bellard to sign separate contracts with companies that will now collect storm debris and monitor the collection process.
The contract with Morgan and Morgan Land Preparation LLC allows the company to pick up storm waste, while another with Thompson Consulting Services LLC permits that company to oversee the performance of Morgan Land Preparations, which is located in the Sunset area, said Bellard.

Eunice residents frustrated over trash pickup delays
Frustration over trash pickup delays in Eunice
and last updated 2020-12-15 22:41:34-05
Residents in Eunice are frustrated over delays in trash pickup, but the mayor says it s not the city s fault.
Mayor Scott Fontenot says for years, the city has been forced to send city workers to collect trash, a job that should have been done by contractors with the parish Solid Waste Commission.
There is a .8% sales tax in the parish dedicated to funding these services that Fontenot says haven t been provided since at least 2012. This is a problem that has been going on for quite some time, and it s really taking away my city crews from doing necessary work, such as drainage and roads, grass cutting, and other services that our citizens expect us to provide, the mayor explained.
Supervisors Talk Landfill Commission Membership
by Charlie Comfort
Oskaloosa, Iowa – It was business as usual for the Mahaska County Supervisors, as the Supervisors met in regular session on December 7th.
The meeting was held in person, except for Supervisor Chuck Webb, who indicated that he would not be present at the meeting and attend virtually due to a positive test for COVID-19.
The item of true contention for the Supervisors was the discussion and possible action pertaining to the appointment of members of the Mahaska County Solid Waste Commission.
At the last Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Chairman Mark Groenendyk said that the landfill commission was currently working on revising their existing 28E agreement. At that time, Groenendyk explained that changes to a 28E agreement could result in changes to how many members the County appoints to represent the unincorporated rural sections of Mahaska County.
