Herat City to Be Listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has accepted a request by the Afghan government to include the western city of Herat among world cultural heritage sites. UNESCO also provided $30,000 to the Afghan government to use in gathering data about the history of the city.  Meanwhile, the Afghan government said it will gather all necessary information about the cultural sites in the city of Herat within the next several months and share it with UNESCO. According to government numbers, the city of Herat in western Afghanistan has a total of 830 cultural sites and is recognized as one of the historic cities in the region.
