But unlike the hubbub surrounding royal weddings and births, public sentiment is different this time. Markle’s specific charge of racist behavior within Buckingham Palace has sparked a debate about the relevancy of a monarchy. Does a centuries-old political system still have a place in the world?
Even if you think the Queen should be stripped of her crown, it wouldn’t put an end to monarchs. In case you didn’t know, there are currently dozens of royal families around the globe. Their levels of power and prestige vary, and none come close to being as popular as the Windsors, but they are major figures nonetheless.

When Haitham bin Tariq Al Said was enthroned as Oman’s sultan 15 months ago, he wasted no time putting the economy front and center of his reform plans. But proposed spending cutbacks are meeting with resistance.
The sultanate remains hugely dependent on oil and gas, which account for 76% of government revenues, S&P Global Platts calculates. Deteriorating public finances, thanks in part to Covid-19, have made cost control urgent, leaving the government little room for maneuver. This year’s budget envisages a $7.5 billion reduction in spending, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) says.

The countries of the Arabian Peninsula have by and large managed the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic its containment and social outcomes, at least quite well ,compared with many other regions. Early lockdowns were effective and relatively brief. The United Arab Emirates remained open for business and have, since January, rolled out one of the world’s most rapid and complete vaccination programs.
But the economic impacts have been severe.
