Print this article A border city in Texas sued the Homeland Security Department on Friday to stop the transport of migrants from the Rio Grande Valley and other parts of the state into the already strained area. Laredo, Texas, alleged it was informed that Border Patrol would be sending a total of six busloads, up from three, equating to roughly 250 to 350 per day into the community, according to a complaint filed in the U.S. Southern District of Texas, Laredo Division, which names DHS, as well as its subagency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and specific officials, as defendants.

Democrats Look to Redirect Homeland Security Hiring After Trump Era

Democrats Look to Redirect Homeland Security Hiring After Trump Era Lawmakers advance funding measure that would slash the number of law enforcement officers at the department. Senior Correspondent House Democrats advanced their measure to fund the Homeland Security Department on Tuesday, moving a bill that would reorient workforce priorities.  Unlike the Trump administration, President Biden and congressional Democrats are not looking to boost staffing levels at immigration enforcement agencies. Biden Picks Trump Critic Chris Magnus to Run Border Agency

WASHINGTON Chris Magnus of Tucson, Ariz., has always been an unusual police chief. He publicly criticized the anti-immigration policies of the Trump administration. He appeared to surprise his own mayor when he abruptly offered his resignation after releasing a video of a man who died in police custody. He was recognized nationally as the man in uniform hoisting a “Black Lives Matter” sign at a protest. President Biden is now preparing to nominate Chief Magnus to be the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, signaling an intent to bring a seismic cultural shift to an agency at the center of some of the more contentious policies of President Donald J. Trump, particularly the separation of thousands of migrant children from their families. Chief Magnus will be expected to make good on Mr. Biden’s campaign pledge to increase oversight at the sprawling agency, one 60 times larger than the department of roughly 800 officers he led in Tucson.
