Bridgefest announces 2021 dates, title sponsor

ABC 10/CW5 HOUGHTON Summer 2021 is set to see the return of a Copper Country staple to its events calendar. As reported by the Keweenaw Report, Bridgefest will be Father’s Day weekend, June 17th-20th, brought to you by Keweenaw Chevrolet Buick GMC. As expected, when an auto dealership is involved, there will be plenty of horsepower on display, new and old. A Touch the Truck event is planned to familiarize people with the current vehicle lineup. Police cruisers and heavy equipment like excavators will also be on display. The kids will have a chance to check their Tonka toys for accuracy.

McBroom, Markkanen meet with Houghton County board | News, Sports, Jobs

gneese@mininggazette.com HOUGHTON The Copper Country’s state legislators met with the Houghton County Board Friday morning to discuss COVID-19 restrictions and other issues in the county at a special meeting Friday. The meeting was the idea of State Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, who answered questions from the board along with Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock. McBroom had intended to meet with counties after taking office in 2019, he said, but had been delayed first by legislative work surrounding mental health, then by COVID-19. McBroom said he hopes to hold the meetings quarterly. COVID-19 had scrambled the dynamics in the legislature even beyond the partisan divide, McBroom said.

UPPAA Publications Chairman Mikel Classen of Sault Ste. Marie initiated the list as a response to the lack of representation of U.P. writers in other Michigan state literary circles. “Traditionally, recognition of Michigan books has been dominated by the university presses downstate, and we would like to take this opportunity to highlight literature that focuses closer to home for us,” Classen said in a news release.

Fans of backcountry skiing, rejoice: After a delayed start, the ski season is now underway at Michigan’s Mount Bohemia. An unusually low-snow winter had pushed back opening day at the remote U.P. ski resort, where operations depend entirely on the region’s typically ample natural snowfall. The resort announced this week that it was officially open as of Wednesday, January 27.
