Having grown up in an agricultural community, Jessica Younger Dickens knew the importance of providing food for families.
So, when she was diagnosed in 2017 with brain cancer, her wishes were simple – find somewhere on the University of Nevada, Reno campus where food could be grown to feed others.
A new memorial apple orchard and separate pollinator garden on campus will do just that. Younger Dickens died in March 2020 at age 39.
More than 120 semi-dwarf cider and table apple trees were planted in her honor at the new Jessica Younger Dickens Memorial Orchard at UNR’s Valley Road Experiment Station. And a pollinator garden is planned for outside her office at UNR’s medical school, where Younger Dickens worked.

Second-year med student Christopher Veal had just learned he failed a remediation course, necessitated because he had failed by just one point his final musculoskeletal exam.
Those failures were bad enough. Then, as a University of Vermont (UVM) dean was giving him this bad news, Veal heard the words he had dreaded. Two former classmates grimly told him: Whenever the dean asked this question, it was a signal he should consider quitting.
In an invited commentary published Feb. 9 in
Academic Medicine, Veal, now in his fourth year at UVM s Larner College of Medicine, described how crushed and terrified he felt. He hid in a stairwell, got down on his knees and cried. He most certainly did want to become a doctor.
