Protests for Laddie Continue: ComPol Says Manslaughter is Strongest Charge Possible
Across the nation, protestors are calling for the police officer who was allegedly behind the shooting death of fourteen-year-old Laddie Gillett to be jailed and charged with murder. Every night, for the past five days, there have been protests and candle vigils for the slain teen. Tonight, News Five’s Paul Lopez takes a look at those cries for justice and why the Commissioner of Police says that a manslaughter charge is actually the strongest charge that can be leveled against the accused officer.

The shooting death of fourteen-year-old Laddie Gillett in Placencia on Wednesday has sent shock waves across the nation. Tonight, we bring you an exclusive eye-witness report from nineteen-year-old Thomas Palacio, the friend who was with Laddie Gillett on the beach when he died. Palacio told New Five’s Paul Lopez via phone about the terror that night as the boys ran from men they thought were trying to rob them.

“Well, he is not charged for murder, let’s make that clear. And under the laws of Belize, the magistrate may grant bail if he so chooses. There is nothing in our respectful view that suggests he should not be granted bail. He is not a foreigner. He is a born Belizean. So every indication is that he is going to show up for the court date. Bail or concerns with regards to bail is whether he is going to show up for his court date. There is nothing to indicate that Mr. Kareem Martinez is not going to show up for his court date and show up for the matter.”
