Review: News of the World - People s Critic: Film Reviews

People s Critic: Film Reviews Review: News of the World By Tim Hall on December 21, 2020 at 8:00 AM In 2013, director Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks teamed up for the compelling drama, Captain Phillips. This year, they’re back together to tell the tale of man’s journey across Texas in News of the World. Based on the 2016 novel by Paulette Jilles, News of the World is the story of Captain Kidd (Tom Hanks), a charismatic Civil War veteran that travels from town-to-town reading the news of the world. On his travels, Kidd finds a young girl named Johanna (Helena Zengel). Johanna doesn’t speak any English and is alone on the side of the road. Unable to find a home for the young girl, Kidd travels with her across the state of Texas to find her family.

Tom Hanks And Paul Greengrass Fundamentally Disagreed About One Very Important Aspect Of News Of The World

CinemaBlend Paul Greengrass’ News of the World is a film that delivers on much of what audiences have come to expect when it comes to big screen westerns, but if there’s one particular thing that sets it apart it’s the profession of its protagonist. Tom Hanks stars in the film not as a sheriff, a bounty hunter, or a farmer, but rather as a journalist who travels from town to town delivering staged readings of the national news. It’s a fascinating aspect of the movie and one of its great strengths, as the performances fully capitalize on Hanks’ natural charisma, but what makes them even more interesting is that they were apparently a subject of serious debate between the director and star, who fundamentally disagreed on exactly how the news should be delivered.

Things To Watch: News of the World

Better Tagline:  Used to be there was money in newspapers. Not So Brief Plot Synopsis: Civil War veteran Captain Jefferson Kidd (Tom Hanks) ekes out a living traveling across Texas and reading newspaper stories to the locals for ten cents a head. But his placid lifestyle is upended when he happens upon Johanna (Helena Zengel) a young girl abducted by the Kiowa as a baby and recently freed. Reluctantly, he decides to deliver her to relatives some 400 miles away, even though she d rather return to her other family. Critical Analysis: Tom Hanks s career spans four decades and you can count on one hand the number of we can t even call them villainous, let s say less than savory roles on the fingers of one hand. Maybe not even more than a couple fingers, depending on your opinion of Walt Disney.
