Praying Like Jesus | Adventist World

3 Min Read Published on: 05-08-2021 May 6, 2021, has been set aside as the National Day of Prayer in the United States. A day to focus on prayer what an amazing and powerful thought! Many of us know and have experienced the power of God in our own prayers, and perhaps we have even experienced God’s power in some collective or group prayers that we have been involved in. We can come to our Lord with boldness and joy because He has called us to participate in calling upon His power. His own promises give us this boldness. Psalm 50:15 encourages us to “call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

Prayer 101 | Adventist World

4 Min Read Published on: 6 hours ago More than two thousand years ago Jesus’ disciples heard their Master pray and longed to pray like He did. “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1) 1 they asked. Jesus gave them an example of how to pray, something we now know as the Lord’s Prayer (see Matt. 6:9-13).  Prayer is always the special gift of communication God gives to us. We need to be careful not to make prayer a mere one-way information transfer, but rather a commitment to sustain a strong relationship with our Creator. The Lord’s Prayer reminds us that prayer is not the mumbling of empty phrases to impress ourselves or others, nor is it a ticking-off of our needs list to God.  God already knows what we need before being asked.

Grandpa, You Ruined My Land | Adventist World

6 Min Read Published on: 2 days ago This morning after I got home from taking my older daughter’s two children to their preschool, I burst into tears. A week or two ago I had told them they needed to be in the car and buckled up by 8:30 in order to get their reward for being on time a stick of sugarless gum. I never expected they would be late today.  Their parents had gotten them both dressed before they left for work, and they ate breakfast much earlier than usual. All they had to do was brush their teeth and go to the car. But they must have my genes. They frittered away the minutes playing, or dawdling at the few necessary things they had to do. I tried to give them increasingly frequent and urgent updates on how much time they had left before they would lose their gum.
