Voters go to the polls this Thursday to decide who will replace Kirsty Williams as the Senedd representative for Brecon and Radnorshire. Ms Williams, a Liberal Democrat, decided to step down at this election, meaning a new figure will be representing the county after next Thursday s election. We have put three questions to each of the candidates standing in the election.
James Evans, Conservative
What do you consider to be the biggest issue facing Powys? I have lived in Brecon and Radnorshire all my life and am proud to call it my home. I want to represent this great Constituency at the Senedd to make a difference to everyone’s lives, bringing new energy and a strong voice.
The move follows a recommendation by the Commission on Justice in Wales (the Thomas Commission) that the Senedd should take a greater role in scrutiny of the justice system. Although much of the system is reserved by the UK Government, the Welsh Government still has significant justice responsibilities. The Wales Governance Centre’s 2019 report,
Public Spending on the justice system for Wales, found that around 38 per cent of spending on justice in Wales is funded by the Welsh Government or local authorities. But despite this significant spending, the Welsh Government does not regularly report on its work on justice policy.
No Welsh government has faced a challenge like Covid-19, which has highlighted the realities – and limitations – of devolution, writes Marialuisa Taddia. If the crisis does pave the way for further governance reforms, will Cardiff finally take control of justice and policing?
The low down
Covid-19 and Brexit have pushed the UK’s devolved governments further into the spotlight. That has created new tensions between Cardiff and London, while familiarising millions in England with the name of Wales’ first minister. Many in Wales hope the crisis will act as a spur to further divergence and decentralisation – with the next parliamentary term in Wales seen as a pivotal period for the devolution project. This is notably true in the spheres of justice and policing. The radical report of the Commission on Justice in Wales in 2019 was a landmark development, but there are ‘many, many barriers’ still to overcome if its 78 recommendations are to be realised.
