Twelve percent of those who received the National Arts Council (NAC) of South Africa grant funding were collectively paid more than R128-million, which equates to 46% of the funding. In contrast the remaining 1142 recipients divided R150-million amongst themselves.
A report into the NAC’s Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) grant funding, compiled by the South African Roadies Association (Sara) has highlighted alleged conflicts of interest and maladministration in the awarding of the grants.
Tsonga mixtape with love from Sho Madjozi

Starstruck: Sho Madjozi could not believe her luck when Thomas Chauke, whom she calls a ‘human library’, agreed to work with her, a feeling she articulates in the song Shahumba. Photo: Sho Madjozi
On her latest “mixtape”,
What a Life, the flamboyant Sho Madjozi pays homage to her Tsonga roots, most poignantly in the track
Shahumba which features the legendary Dr Thomas Chauke (sadly no relation, but my icon since childhood).
Shahumba (sometimes spelt Xahumba) is one of Chauke’s clan names and the repeated line “Se ni endla ti hit-i ka Shahumbo” throughout the song translates to “I am now making hits with Shahumbo,” revealing the young star’s own starstruck disbelief at this reality.
