Japan and the United States: special allies

“The prime minister has brought the sun out, so he can do about anything.” That was the way President Joe Biden of the United States graciously, and subtly, publicly introduced Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan at the White House. The Rising Sun, national symbol of Japan, was prominently associated with an earlier period of militarism that led to World War II in the Pacific. Today, Japan with the United States boasts one of the largest and most advanced economies in the world, and is a leader in support of international organizations. The nation in recent years has been an active participant in international security cooperation.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. Long before COVID-19 challenged downtown eateries to transform their approach to serving guests, a landscape class at Purdue University researched an approach gaining appeal in larger urban areas. Five years before the pandemic, the Purdue students looked at how downtown Lafayette eateries could utilize parking spaces outside their front doors by creating outdoor seating. Streateries, as they were coined, sounded like a good idea at the time, said Lafayette planner and project manager Margy Deverall. The first reading of a resolution to allow streateries and parklets public spaces created for visitors to sit, snack, sip coffee, hang out and enjoy the downtown experience was presented at last week s City Council meeting.
