Will there ever be a tangible solution to the plastic packaging debate?
The idea of only using sustainable packaging – eliminating waste, low carbon footprint, recyclable or compostable - seems easy enough, yet the reality for many businesses is more complex and dependent on the industry they work in
Images on social media of sea creatures wrapped in plastic has had a huge impact on the public perception of plastic packaging in recent years. Between four million and 12 million metric tons of plastic enters the oceans each year, threatening marine life and polluting our food.
A lot of plastic is produced from fossil fuels. These contribute to climate change, which is now a central concern for governments, businesses, and consumers alike. For some, plastic waste has become a shorthand for the way we mistreat our environment and the need for sustainable packaging has never been clearer.

Dame Cheryl Gillan, who has died aged 68, was a combative Conservative MP who was Welsh Secretary in David Cameron’s Coalition, but made a greater impact campaigning against the HS2 high-speed railway being driven through her Chesham & Amersham constituency.
She was a forceful personality in the Commons, seen by some as overbearing and often rebuked by the Chair for raising bogus points of order. She was also the first woman to turn out for the Lords & Commons cricket team, having been a useful all-rounder at Cheltenham Ladies’ College.

Processed meat firm cuts plastic use
Processed meats firm Bell Germany plans to remove 35 tonnes of plastic from its supply chain each year with the launch of recyclable packaging for its sliced ham range.
The new packaging, developed in partnership with Mondi, will be used for more than 30 products – including Seranno, Prosciutto and Savoy sliced ham – and uses 37% less material compared to standard modified atmosphere packaging.

Mondi has produced a recyclable mono-material pack for Bell Germanyâs thinly sliced gourmet ham ranges.
Bell Germany launched the solution in March for over 30 products including serrano, prosciutto and savoy sliced ham. The new solution will replace a multi-material non-recyclable plastic solution, reportedly using 37% less material compared to standard modified atmosphere packaging.
Mondi says that switch will reduce plastic waste for Bell Germany by 35 tonnes per year thanks the solutionâs light weight. It is also projected to lower waste disposal fees for Bell Germany and meets the design for recycling guidelines of leading retailers.
