Swindon Crown Court A BRUTE who attacked his girlfriend then later tried to get her to retract her statement has been jailed. Matthew Rogers, 30, was described as living a double life due to his struggle with alcohol. Jailing him for 18 months, Recorder Simon Foster said: “You should understand and I tell you now that drink is not a defence. It is an aggravating feature.” Appearing before Swindon Crown Court via video link from HMP Winchester, Rogers, of Downs View, Bradford on Avon, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm, common assault and perverting the course of justice. He admitted attacking his girlfriend between March 4 and 10 then, in a more serious attack on March 27, left her with more serious injuries.
