Taipei, Dec. 20 (CNA) Electric trains begin running on South Link line Sunday, allowing them to completely circle Taiwan, after the project to electrify the line in southern Taiwan connecting Taitung and Pingtung counties was completed recently.
The 98.2-kilometer line between Taitung Station and Fangliao Station in Pingtung had been the last in Taiwan to be served by diesel locomotives, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said Sunday.
Taking the first electric train on the route Sunday morning, Transportation Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said the use of electric trains will allow trips between Kaohsiung and Taitung to take 90 minutes as opposed to two hours previously.
