Posted: August 3, 2021 Area Restriction for Mineral Creek wildfire rescinded The area restriction that was established around the Mineral Creek wildfire, 25 km southwest of Invermere, has been rescinded. Firefighting personnel no longer need to restrict public access to operate efficiently and safely in the area. The BC Wildfire Service reminds members of the public that the Mineral Creek wildfire is an active worksite and they should exercise caution at all times while travelling in the area. Even if an area restriction has been rescinded, officials still have the authority under the Wildfire Act and its regulations to order anyone to leave the area.

Posted: July 30, 2021 East Kootenay Wildfire Update The Bill Nye Mountain Wildfire, burning since about July 8 seven km southeast of Wasa, is now an estimated 2,054 hectares. BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) today reported the fire grew an estimated 50 hectares on July 29. “Personnel plan to map the perimeter the morning of Friday, July 30. Expect to see a change in size once this is complete. Growth is to the north, where the fire is backing down a north-facing slope. The fire is currently sheltered from prevailing winds, muting its activity. “Structure protection units arrived at the incident the evening of Thursday, July 29, and implementation is underway. On Friday, crews continue working toward current objectives for this fire: laying out and constructing control lines to the north of the fire to protect structures and build toward containment. Planned ignition for Mineral Creek wildfire | Columbia Valley, East Kootenay

Posted: July 28, 2021 Planned ignition for Mineral Creek wildfire The BC Wildfire Service will undertake a planned ignition on the Mineral Creek wildfire, 25 southwest of Invermere, to remove unburned fuel in the fire’s path, thereby helping to limit the fire’s growth and spread. This planned ignition will target an area of approximately 20 hectares in the northwest corner of the fire that will bring the fire down to more workable terrain for crews. Increased smoke from this action may be visible from Canal Flats and along Highway 93/95. The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Thursday, July 29. Burning will proceed only if conditions are suitable.
