Two months after a Lafayette grand jury declined to charge the officers who fatally shot Trayford Pellerin in August 2020, the Louisiana State Police has released their names and accounts of the incident.
The names and accounts were included in the state police investigation into the fatal
shooting of the 31-year-old Black man, which detectives ultimately deemed a justifiable homicide.
The grand jury considered and rejected second-degree murder charges, and lesser charges were not considered.
When 15th Judicial District Attorney Don Landry presented the grand jury s findings in May, he refused to release the officers names and later redacted them in public records requests.
Jurors convicted one brother of murder in the fatal shooting of Brandon Broussard.
Shavis Toby was found guilty of second-degree murder, which carries a life sentence. Carlos Toby was found not guilty. Both were convicted of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder.
Jurors deliberated for about five hours Saturday before rendering the verdict. Sentencing for the conspiracy charges will be held at a later date.
In their closing arguments that morning, attorneys on both sides said they were fighting for justice.
State prosecutors said justice for Broussard and his family would have been finding each Carlos Toby and Shavis Toby guilty on all counts.
Keep our tax dollars in our local schools
Harrisburg politicians are up to their shenanigans believing we are not paying attention. They plan to use our tax dollars to further enrich owners of private and religious schools.
Senate Bill 1, introduced by Sen. Scott Martin to the Senate Education Committee, would:
Increase tax breaks to businesses and corporations who support private and religious schools, then increase that by 25% each year. Cost: $300M this year; $1B over five years.
Empower a commission of political appointees to open charter schools without school board and taxpayer approval. Cost: In 2019-20 alone we, the Pennsylvania taxpayers, spent $2B on charter school tuition bills, which is money taken away from our local schools.
The three Lafayette police officers who shot and killed Pellerin are unknown.
Landry said his office would not release the names of the officers involved during a press conference.
Officers fired 11 shots in 2.4 seconds, Landry said.
What has Trayford Pellerin s family said after the grand jury s findings?
Pellerin s mother, Michelle Pellerin, said she had not seen much of the evidence that Landry presented at his conference and that it was hard taking in the new information.
The family was previously shown one video – the body camera footage from the first officer to respond to the scene who follows Pellerin from one gas station to another.
