And since a constitutional amendment didn t happen darn the luck it looks like we re just going to have to do those maps the old-fashioned way after all. It s now up to the Legislature to craft a proposal for redistricting. But the governor is still going to be absolutely, positively sure that, at the end of the process, the new map is fair. Honest.
This flimflammery is the sort of thing we d expect from an unscrupulous used-car salesman selling us the undercoating we didn t want, not a governor who billed himself as a change-maker in Springfield. We re now left to wonder what fair will really mean when the next inevitably jury-rigged map lands on Pritzker s desk.
Pritzker said in 2018 that he would veto maps "in any way drafted or created by legislators, political party leaders and/or their staffs or allies" and would support an independent commission set up by the state Legislature.
Gov. JB Pritzker broke his silence on redistricting Tuesday and reiterated his desire to see a fair map, but distanced himself from past comments in support of the creation of an independent redistricting commission which Republicans are currently pushing for.
“As I’ve said, I will veto an unfair map, Pritzker said at a Tuesday press conference. I’ve also said that in order for us to have an independent commission, we’d need to have a constitutional amendment to actually change the way the process works in the constitution. That did not happen, so now as we reach the end of this session I look to the legislature for their proposal for a redistricting map.
