Capitol Fax com - Your Illinois News Radar » Pritzker mischaracterizes his own 2018 remap veto pledge, also claims 2011 remap had a very strong leaning toward fairness

Tuesday, Apr 27, 2021 Let’s once again go back to March 5, 2018 and my question to all gubernatorial candidates… Will you pledge as governor to veto any state legislative redistricting map proposal that is in any way drafted or created by legislators, political party leaders and/or their staffs or allies? The exception, of course, would be the final official draft by LRB. JB Pritzker’s response… Yes, I will pledge to veto. We should amend the constitution to create an independent commission to draw legislative maps, but in the meantime, I would urge Democrats and Republicans to agree to an independent commission to handle creating a new legislative map. That designated body should reflect the gender, racial, and geographic diversity of the state and look to preserve the Voting Rights Act decisions to ensure racial and language minorities are fully represented in the electoral process.

Insight on Illinois - March 2021 #1 | Clark Hill PLC

To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: The first three months of this new year have shown 2021 to be quite a year of change. Of course, President Biden has assumed the helm in Washington and is filling out his cabinet posts. The pace of change in Springfield has been brisk indeed. Not only have we seen a new House Speaker for the first time in decades, both the Illinois Republican Party and the Democratic Party of Illinois have chosen new leaders within the past month. In Don Tracy, the Republicans have chosen a downstate lawyer and businessman to take the party helm. And in Robin Kelly, the Democrats have chosen a suburban, African American woman (and Member of Congress) to succeed as the party’s chair. Each of these choices speak to the centers of power for each party and will have ramifications for this election cycle. As always, we watch these developments closely.
