TUNBRIDGE â Itâs doubtful if, over 50 years ago when Michael Millard built his first guitar in an apartment in Brooklyn that he could project into the future to his retirement and see himself as one of Americaâs foremost builders of acoustic guitars. But as he winds down from his years at the helm of Froggy Bottom guitars in Tunbridge he can look back at 5,000 guitars in the hands of players and great respect from the guitar building industry.
Millardâs workshop these days is a converted shed on a back road. Over the years heâs created distinctive instruments in New York, New Hampshire, Newfane and Chelsea. While he wonât be working with his luthier partners on a regular basis, he says he wonât give up guitar building altogether, choosing instead to build instruments when a customer asks for his special touch.

Thereâs no shortage of manufacturers working in the realm of guitars and related equipment that purport to produce âcustom madeâ goods, to work by hand, or to craft their wares the way it was done in the good old days. Tour the Froggy Bottom workshop, however, and speak to founder Michael Millard and his partner luthiers Eric Goodenough and Andy Mueller, and you really come away with a feel for what such terms should encompass.
âMost of whatâs always been referred to as âhand-madeâ in the world of guitars really stretches the meaning of the phrase,â says Millard. âI mean, âCome on, guys!â You know? You can say it all you want, but it doesnât make it true.â

Some winter friends, snowbirds, stopped to visit for the first time this winter and their delayed, late arrival had nothing to do with the pandemic.
For these were real snowbirds, dark-eyed juncoes, down from the boreal forests of Canada, not “snowbird” humans headed for warmer climes. And they were weeks behind their normal first appearance.
Dark-eyed juncoes earned their nickname, it has been said, because their dark gray tops and white bellies are reminiscent of the heavy rolling snow-clouds so familiar in winter. Most winters they show up by Thanksgiving and at least before Christmas, and they stay till winter breaks in March or early April.
