Sheldon Police Officer Injured in Friday Morning Altercation By charguth February 5, 2021 8:01 pm Saga Communications Sheldon, IA (KICD) A Sheldon police officer sustained minor injuries Friday morning during an altercation at a local business. Police Chief Scott Burtch says Officer Eric Meinecke was called to Campus Cleaners around eight o’clock for an intoxicated person causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. Upon arrival, Officer Meinecke reportedly confronted the individual, identified as Dustyn Bergstrom, outside and forced to deploy his taser and pepper spray which had minimal effect. That then led to a physical struggle while Officer Meinecke attempted get control of Bergstrom who was eventually taken into custody with the help of Chief Burtch who was called to the scene when no other units were available nearby.

Five Charged in Sheldon Warrant Service January 29, 2021 11:05 am Saga Communications Sheldon, IA (KICD)– Five people have been charged following a Thursday morning warrant service in Sheldon. Police Chief Scott Burtch tells us two search warrants were executed simultaneously at 817 and 903 4th Street, which led to Shawn Rooney, Jason Rutzen, Ryan Monaghan, Debra Schuknecht, and Eric Schwager being taken into custody. All five parties were charged with gathering where controlled substances are used and possession of drug paraphernalia, with Rooney, Rutzen, Monaghan, and Schuknecht also being charged for possessing methamphetamine. Rooney was additionally charged with possession of marijuana and Rutzen with obstructing prosecution.

Council Approves Grant Application Resolution

January 20, 2021 Sheldon, Iowa Following a public hearing at Wednesday’s Sheldon City Council meeting, the Council passed a resolution agreeing to apply for financial assistance with the USDA Rural Development to finance pubic safety equipment. A representative of the City’s grant writing company explained that the total value of the projects for which the City is applying to the USDA is $1.823-million. The representative said that a grant could be made for 35% of that total, with the remainder, if approved, coming in the form of low-interest loans. When asked about a timeline for a potential grant and loan, the grant writer told the Council that the USDA typically reviews the requests as soon as they’re received and a response normally comes within a couple of weeks. The monies being applied for are for upgrading and replacing safety equipment for the City’s public safety departments; Sheldon Police Department, Sheldon Fire Department, SCAT and Sheldon EMA.
