State seeks youthful status for U-Mall shooter despite risk | Police, Fire And Rescue

But they also want his criminal case transferred to juvenile court. Tyshane Smith of Burlington, who fled to Florida after the Feb. 1 shooting, appeared briefly for his arraignment in Vermont Superior Court on Friday April 2. Authorities have said the shooting may have been sparked by a gang-related confrontation. Smith fired at least five shots, three of them at the intended target before he fled with a group of 8 people, South Burlington Police said. On Monday, the department said it has a lead on where the stolen handgun came from. “It was acquired in an unreported crime in Winooski,” Police Chief Shawn Burke said. He did not elaborate.

South Burlington finds public recreation areas vandalized

A string of vandalism incidents in several public areas of South Burlington have some residents concerned and, in one case, heartbroken. The city has seen an increase in destruction in Farrell Park and along the recreation path near the former Wheelock Farm in recent months, South Burlington police said. Police Chief Shawn Burke called the activities senseless.   I can’t say the acts are definitively the same person, but given the proximity and similarity, I wouldn’t be surprised, Burke said.  One resident, Jacques-Paul J.P. Marton, says he is trying not to take the destruction of cairns he has built along the recreation path personally. For almost a decade, he has built the cairns from rocks and other objects he s discovered while tending the land now owned by the University of Vermont. He has stopped rebuilding the destroyed cairns, at least for a little while.
