Raymond L. Pettyjohn was first introduced to construction through the railroad industry where he worked as a carpenter. He later found work at projects like the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River, which eventually lead him to Portland where he worked in the Swan Island Shipyard. Throughout his long career in construction, Ray began to see a vacuum within the industry. Business was booming at the time, but to Ray it seemed that personal relationships were lacking. So, in January of 1961 Ray approached a colleague of his, Charlie Campbell to see if they could start a general contracting business that put interpersonal relationships above all else.
