  MEMBERTOU FIRST NATION In First Nations communities all over Cape Breton Island, people stopped to reflect on Monday. In most - if not all - of these communities, there are residential school survivors and descendants of residential school survivors. A makeshift memorial to the 215 indigenous children whose remains were found buried near a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C., created a powerful image: 215 pairs of shoes were placed on the steps of a church on the Membertou First Nation. It broke my heart, it really did, said Tracy Smith. Smith dropped by with her one-year-old granddaughter, to pay their respects.

Jordan s Way raises $10,700 for Des Moines County Humane Society The Hawk Eye Kandi Hillyer was shivering Tuesday night after she got hit with ice water outside the Des Moines County Humane Society. Her staff  nailed me with about eight buckets. I was completely drenched. It was not warm whatsoever. I think they have been wanting to do that for years, the shelter director laughed. The experience was totally worth it, Hillyer said.  It was an amazing night. The event marked the shelter s Facebook live fundraiser with nationally-known charity founder Kris Rotonda raising more than $10,000.  Jordan s Way live-streams energetic fundraisers for animal shelters around the country.

Nova Scotia reports 2 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday Currently, there are 46 cases of the virus in the province Dec 19, 2020 1:28 PM By: HalifaxToday Staff As of today, Dec. 19, Nova Scotia has 46 active cases of COVID-19. Two new cases are being reported today. One new case is in Western Zone and the other is in Eastern Zone. Both cases are related to travel outside of Atlantic Canada. The people are self-isolating, as required. As confirmed publicly by Eskasoni Chief Leroy Denny, the case in Eastern Zone is in the Eskasoni First Nation community. Public health continues to work closely with Chief Denny to manage the case. Contact tracing is underway and at this point, there is no evidence of community spread.

Nova Scotia confirms two new COVID-19 cases

Provincial officials announced two new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. One in the Eastern Zone and one in the Western Zone. The Eastern Zone case was confirmed on Friday by Eskasoni Chief Leroy Denny. Public Health continues to work closely with Chief Denny to manage the case and contact tracing is underway.
