A fire caused extensive damage to a seven-unit apartment building in Saint John’s north end Friday, according to fire officials.
Platoon Chief Kevin Comeau said emergency crews were called to the four-storey building on First Street around 6:40 p.m.
Comeau, who was first on the scene, said he saw smoke coming from the rear of the building and flames from a side window.
“Crews were quick to attack and knock down what we initially thought was the bulk of the fire,” Comeau said in a phone interview.

Fire officials are reporting only minor damage after a small fire broke out at the historic Saint John City Market.
Platoon Chief Kevin Comeau said fire crews were called to the uptown building just after 9 p.m. Thursday.
“Fire crews did get a call for a possible structure fire at the Germain Street entrance which turned out to be a small fire that had started on the roof of the entrance atrium,” Comeau said.
Comeau said fire crews quickly put out the fire and were able to contain the blaze to the area where it started.
