At Unified Command, a call for Sitkans to travel cautiously

With nearly 70 percent of the eligible population at least partially vaccinated, Sitka is starting to come out of its long COVID hibernation. Summer is just around the corner, and plans are now forming for summer activities, like outdoor concerts and 4th of July events.
When the Sitka Unified Command met last week (4-28-21), the group discussed recent and upcoming gatherings, from graduations to lawn concerts.
Fire Chief Craig Warren congratulated the staff at local high schools for holding carefully regulated proms last month without spurring any COVID outbreaks.
Cooked books serve up smoke, but no fire, in Sitka trailer home

Firefighters responded to a Sitka trailer park on Wednesday (2-3-21), after receiving reports of heavy smoke.
Fire Chief Craig Warren says firefighters arrived at Arrowhead Trailer Court around 1:30 in the afternoon and found a box of books smoldering on a kitchen stove.
Warren says the residents of the trailer were packing up belongings to move, and were donating the box of books to a church group. He says someone accidentally bumped the controls and turned the kitchen range onto “low.”
Nine firefighters responded to the call. Although there was no actual fire to put out, Warren says there was “a lot of smoke.”
