CITY OF ELMHURST FIRE DEPARTMENT: Elmhurst Fire Chief Tom Freeman Announces Retirement

City of Elmhurst Fire Department issued the following announcement on May 5. City of Elmhurst Fire Chief Tom Freeman has announced his retirement from the City of Elmhurst, effective April 30, 2021. Chief Freeman assumed his role as the City of Elmhurst Fire Chief on October 10, 2016. He brought over 44 years of experience and expertise in firefighting, coming to Elmhurst after serving as the fire chief for the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District for 22 years. He also served as a firefighter for the Village of Evergreen Park where he was promoted to several positions, eventually becoming Assistant Fire Chief. During his time with the City of Elmhurst, Chief Freeman had many accomplishments, most significantly, his instrumental role in improving the Elmhurst Fire Department to an ISO Class 1 rating. He was also vital in the implementation and success of Rescue One, the department’s rapid response vehicle.

Satterell Singh is looking forward to the day the water system he is creating at the Community Garden at Ygnacio and Congress in East Oakland is ready.     Toting 5-gallon bottles from the back of his station wagon into the small lot across from Horace Mann Elementary School in the Fairfax neighborhood is wearing Singh out. “I’m invested in getting rid of this method,” quipped the son of an African American woman and a Punjabi immigrant who met in college in the 1970s.    The 2005 graduate of Castlemont High School is a former linebacker who carries the bottles with ease. He explains that, so far, everything that comes into the garden is either by his hands or one of the two wheelbarrows in the center of the patch. 

Hartford Fire Chief Leaving for New Role in Oakland

“It has been an enormous privilege serving the residents and firefighters of Hartford over the last five years, and I will miss both very much,” said Freeman. “The men and women of the Hartford Fire Department do outstanding service for our community each and every day, and it has been a true honor to work alongside them. Assistant Chief Rodney Barco will serve as interim chief, the mayor s office announced. Barco has been a firefighter with the department for 25 years. Hartford has been fortunate to have one of the best fire chiefs in the nation for the last five years, and it is bittersweet to see Chief Freeman move on,” said Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin in a statement. “Chief Freeman has led our fire department with great distinction, and he has earned the trust and respect of all of us in city government, as well as residents across Hartford. He has been an incredibly effective advocate for our firefighters, hiring new classes of diverse recruits, making sure we’
